I had the opportunity to learn a new trapping technique from a local catfish farmer in Vietnam. A few days prior, the farmers were placing the traps into their catfish pond as theirs birds eat their fish, which causes them to lose money. The farmer suggest that I do it, which I couldn't turn down. These traps require somebody to swim in the catfish pond, place a palm tree branch thing vertical, jamming it into the mud, and then setting the live bird trap on top. The type of birds that like to hang out and eat the fish are Yellow Bitterns and a Black-Crowned Night Herons or simply a Night Heron. Both of these birds are not endangered by any means and are actually on the far spectrum of the conservation status (Least Concerned). I only set two traps as I wanted to catch one bird. And yes, my dachshund and I ate the bird.


Tôi đã có cơ hội học thêm một kỹ năng đặt bẫy mới từ một người nuôi cá địa phương ở Việt Nam. Trước vài ngày, chủ trại cá sẽ đặt bẫy ở hồ cá Trê của họ vì mấy con chim này bắt cá trong hồ, đồng nghĩa với việc lấy đi đồng lương của họ. Ông chủ đã nhờ tôi đặt bẫy, việc này tôi không thể từ chối được. Loại bẫy này cần một người bơi ra giữa hồ để đặt cọc thẳng đứng, cắm xuống bùn, sau đó đặt bẫy lên trên. Loại chim bắt cá này là Cò và Vạc Rạ, hoặc đơn giản chỉ là chim Vạc. Cả hai loại này đều không phải động vật quý hiếm và thực tế thì có rất nhiều trong tự nhiên, còn rất xa mới vào danh sách quý hiếm cần bảo vệ. Tôi chỉ đặt 2 bẫy thôi vì tôi chỉ muốn bắt 1 con. Và tất nhiên, chú chó Xúc Xích và tôi đã nấu và ăn con Vạc.
