Mistakes in English speaking with – One of, Few of, Some of, None of & All of – Improve your spoken English

http://www.learnex.in/mistakes....-in-english-speaking

This is an English speaking lesson which is going to deal with the use of very common words like one of, a few of, some of, most of, none of and all of. This is a mistake that most people make while speaking English and is incorrectly used in spoken English by most of the English speakers. While learning English students find these phrases confusing and often make mistakes in English speaking while using them

Let’s look at the first phrase “one of” in a sentence.

Example: One of my books is missing.

Now a lot of people do not add the “s” or the plural form of books. They don’t do so because they think that you can’t have “is” followed by the plural form of a noun. But actually you have to add an “s” to the noun when you are using “one of” and follow that noun by “is”. This is because the word “one” is the subject in this sentence. So, you have to use “is” after the noun.

Example: A few of my books are missing. A few refers to 2 or more books. So you will use are and of course the plural form of the noun

This is the same rule you apply when using some of, most of, none of and all of.

Now this rule for these phrases only applies when we have countable nouns or nouns that you can quantify into individual units.

Uncountable nouns: advice, news, things like butter, milk, water, rice.we can’t count these things. These nouns are always singular in their use of spoken English.

Eg: Some of his advice is good. This same rule applies for most of, all of and none of. Which means you can replace some of with most of, all of and none of

However, you can’t use one of and few of when using an uncountable noun.

So, you can’t say -one of his advice is good or a few of his advice is good. Both are incorrect.

Vocabulary and Phrases - Football or Soccer - Free English Lesson

People have been playing football for over 3,000 years. Nobody can tell where it was played for the first time. There is evidence that it was played in Japan, China, Rome and Greece. But the birthplace of modern soccer is Britain (both England and Scotland).

Football or soccer, which is considered to be the most popular sport in the world, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a spherical ball.Foot ball

The object of the game, which is played on a wide rectangular field with a goal on each end of the field, is to score by putting the ball into the adversary goal. The goal is kept by a goalkeeper who is allowed, at the exception of other players, to use his / her hands in the game. The winners are those who score the most goals. If the football (or soccer) match ends in a draw the two teams may be redirected to play extra time and / or penalty shootouts (each team taking turns to have a set number of kicks at the goal.)

The way football is played now was first codified in England. Nowadays, it is governed by the FIFA, "Fédération Internationale de Football Association" (International Federation of Association Football.) The game is played now all over the world and competitions are organized nationally, continentally and internationally. The most prestigious of football competitions is the World Cup, which is held every four years. This lesson will help you learn some vocabulary and phrases related to the football game which would help you to talk about this great game with your folks and friends.

Take a test : http://www.learnex.in/what-are....-intensifiers-mitiga

What are Intensifiers?

The word that emphasizes another word or phrase is an Intensifier. It also known as a booster.
Intensifiers enhances and gives additional emotional context to the word it modifies
We use words like very, really and extremely to make adjectives stronger:

It's a very interesting game

Everyone was extremely excited

Other commonly used intensifiers are:
• Amazingly
• Incredibly
• Exceptionally
• Completely

What are Mitigators?
Mitigators are the opposite of intensifiers. When we want to make an adjective less strong we use these words:

For Example : fairly - rather - quite

By the end of the day we were rather tired.
The film wasn't great but it was quite exciting.
We had a pretty good time at the party.

Mitigators can also be used with comparative adjectives:
We use the following words and phrases as mitigators:
• a bit
• just a bit
• a little
• a little bit
• just a little bit
• rather - slightly

She's a bit younger than I am.
This one is rather bigger.

English Grammar lesson - Using 'Make' & 'Get' as causative verbs.

Blog : http://www.learnex.in/using-ma....ke-get-as-causative-

In this English Grammar lesson, you will learn about the verbs ‘get’ and ‘make’ being causatives. Both these words lose their original meaning when they are used a causatives.

Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com
Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast
Youtube : http://www.youtube.com/learnexmumbai

Make:

Make is used as a causative verb in the structure ‘make somebody do something’. Its past form is ‘made’. Do not use ‘to’ in this structure. You use this structure when someone compels or forces somebody to do something. There is very little or no option left.

Example 01: My boss made me work late last evening. (not made me to stay late)

Example 02: The police made John pull over for speeding. (made is used as the police has authority to compel someone to stop)

Example 03: My mother made me clean my closet.

Get:

Get is used as a causative verb in the structure ‘get somebody to do something. Its past form is ‘got’. This structure is used when you beg or convince someone to do something for you.

Example: He got me to sell my old car at a very low price. ( use ‘to’)

Example: Maria always gets her baby to stop crying.

Example: My mother got me to cook dinner for her.
