What does rhetoric mean? What is the meaning of rhetorical?

In these modern times of fast paced media feeds and an ever increasing connection with the media through technology, it has become necessary for those in the public eye to make statements and comments more often. With this need comes the increase in the use of something called 'rhetoric'. The word 'rhetoric' is a noun that describes the use of words and phrases in a hollow, insincere way while sounding genuine on the surface. The clever use of words which appear on the surface to be sincere and genuine, but are in fact the opposite. A question that is put forward or asked without a reply being needed is a rhetorical question. You ask the question, without needing a reply or answer. ''Why does it always rain when I want to go for a walk?'' There is no need to answer that question, it's rhetorical. A persuasive statement that appears to have meaning by using common figures of speech can be described as rhetoric. Politicians and authority figures often use rhetoric to put a positive spin on something. The use of rhetoric is seen as a negative thing. To make promises and set goal that clearly won't be kept or achieved, is to use rhetoric...rhetoric, rhetorical.

You don't have to look very far these day to find someone casting doubt or suspicion over something or someone. We live in very cynical times, but what does cynical mean? The word cynical is an adjective which can mean the belief that something is being done for the gain of one individual or a group of people. To doubt something because you believe that greed is the motive or reason for doing something is to be cynical. ''Some cynical people think that politicians are only interested in filling their own pockets with money.'' A cynical person might cast doubt over whether something will occur or not. ''I doubt they will come now it's raining.'' ''Oh don't be so cynical!'' A person who is cynical is a cynic. Cynicism is the noun for the action of being a cynic. ''There is a wave of cynicism flowing through the population.'' To question the usefulness of something or someone can also be described as being cynical. Another word that can be used to describe a doubtful view of something is sceptical. A sceptic is a person who assumes something is being done for a hidden reason. To assume that there is a hidden agenda or plan surrounding a person or event is to be sceptical. Scepticism is the noun that describes the sceptic. Are you a cynical person? Are you a sceptic? Synonyms of cynical include - doubtful, distrustful, suspicious, disbelieving, unbelieving, scoffing, doubting, incredulous. Cynical
